Morocco at the Crossroads

After gaining independence from France and Spain in 1956, Morocco carved out a future of Islamic modernity through various political and economic forms in 2011. Hundreds of thousands of young Moroccans protested in what is termed as the Arab Spring, calling for a shift to constitutional monarchy. While the demonstration remained controlled and an agreement reached, much work is still needed to appease the pro-democracy activists. Can Morocco move towards a more modern and liberal nation but yet maintaining its Islamic influence in the lives of its people?
